Comparison of quality
Degree shows the level of quality in a person, place or thing.
Degree किसी व्यक्ति, स्थान या वस्तु की quality के level को बताती है।
There are three degrees of comparison:
1. Positive Degree
2. Comparative Degree
3. Superlative Degree
Examples :-
1. Tall
2. Taller
3. Tallest
1. Positive Degree :-
It shows a simple quality.
2. Comparative Degree :-
It compares two persons or things.
3. Superlative Degree :-
It compares one with all others.
Note :-
Degrees are usually formed from adjectives.
Positive Degree:
Simple quality:
Positive Degree shows the simple quality of a noun or pronoun.
Positive Degree noun या pronoun की simple quality बताती है।
Structure :-
Subject + verb + adjective
Examples:-
1. Ram is tall.
2. Sita is intelligent.
3. This book is useful.
4. The mango is sweet.
5. He is brave.
Use: Positive Degree is used when there is no direct comparison.
More Examples :-
1. This flower is beautiful.
2. My brother is strong.
3. Delhi is big.
Rule: Positive Degree does not use 'than' or 'the'.
Comparative Degree:
→ Comparing two
Comparative Degree is used to compare two persons, places or things.
Comparative Degree का प्रयोग दो persons, places या things की तुलना करने के लिए होता है।
Structure :-
Subject + verb + comparative adjective + than + object
Examples :-
1. Ram is taller than Shyam.
2. Sita is more intelligent than Gita.
3. This book is better than that book.
4. Gold is costlier than silver.
5. My house is bigger than yours.
Important Point :-
Comparative Degree usually uses 'than'.
Rule :-
Use comparative degree when comparing two things.
Superlative Degree:
→ Comparing one with all
Superlative Degree is used to compare one person or thing with all others.
Superlative Degree का प्रयोग किसी एक व्यक्ति या वस्तु की तुलना सभी से करने के लिए होता है।
Structure :-
Subject + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun/group
Examples:-
1. Ram is the tallest boy in the class.
2. Sita is the most intelligent girl.
3. This is the best book.
4. Mount Everest is the highest peak.
5. He is the bravest soldier.
Important Point :-
Superlative Degree usually uses 'the'.
Rule:- Use Superlative Degree when comparing one with many.
Positive to Comparative:
→ Same meaning change

Positive Degree को meaning बदले बिना Comparative Degree में बदला जा सकता है।
Example :-
Positive :-
Ram is as tall as Shyam.
Comparative :-
Shyam is not taller than Ram.
Rules :-
1. as + adjective + as changes into not + comparative + than
2. Subject and object may change places.
3. Meaning should remain the same.
More Examples:-
1. Positive :- Sita is as intelligent as Gita.
Comparative :-
Gita is not more intelligent than Sita.
2. Positive :- This pen is as good as that pen.
Comparative:- That pen is not better than this pen.
Comparative to Superlative:
→ Two forms
Comparative Degree can be changed into Superlative Degree when comparison is with a group. Comparative Degree को Superlative Degree में बदला जा सकता है जब comparison किसी group से हो।
Example :-
Comparative :- Ram is taller than any other boy in the class.
Superlative :- Ram is the tallest boy in the class.
Rules :-
1.Use 'the' before superlative adjective.
2. Remove 'than any other'.
3. Use suitable group words.
More Examples :-
1.Comparative:- Gold is more precious than any other metal.
Superlative:- Gold is the most precious metal.
2. Comparative:- Everest is higher than any other peak.
Superlative:- Everest is the highest peak.
Irregular Degrees
→Special forms
Some adjectives do not follow the regular rule of adding -er or -est.
कुछ adjectives में -er या -est लगाकर degree नहीं बनती। इनकी special forms होती हैं।
Irregular Degrees :-
- Good → Better → Best
- Bad → Worse → Worst
- Little → Less → Least
- Much → More → Most
- Many → More → Most
- Far → Farther → Farthest
- Old → Older → Oldest
- Late → Later → Latest
Examples :-
1. This book is better than that book.
2. He is the best player.
3. My condition is worse today.
4. She has the most marks.
Note:- Irregular degrees must be memorized.

Students often make mistakes in degrees of Comparison.

1. Ram is more taller than Shyam.
Correct :- Ram is taller than Shyam.
2. She is the most tallest girl.
Correct :- She is the tallest girl.
3. This is better than any book.
Correct :- This is better than any other book.
4. He is best boy in the class.
Correct :- He is the best boy in the class.
5. Sita is intelligent than Gita.
Correct :- Sita is more intelligent than Gita.
Rule :- Do not use double comparison.
Wrong :- more taller, most tallest
Correct: taller, tallest
